Scholarship Guidelines

  1. Membership Requirement: Applicants must be members in good standing of Pioneer Appalachia Federal Credit Union (PAFCU). 🔹 Please note: The student applying must be the member — not just a parent or guardian. Non-members can join the credit union for a nominal fee.

  2. Academic Criteria: Applicants should be either graduating high school seniors or current college students, including those attending career technical centers, community colleges, or junior colleges for the upcoming school year. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale is required.

  3. Additional Qualifications: Applicants are expected to demonstrate a blend of academic achievement, work experience, community service, and extracurricular involvement. A key component of the application is an essay that reflects an understanding of PAFCU, along with creativity and strong writing skills. At least one letter of reference is also required.

  4. Restrictions: Employees, directors of PAFCU, and their immediate family members are not eligible. Applicants may not receive more than two Pioneer AFCU scholarships in total. 

  • How to Apply: Applications can be submitted via email or mail with all required documents attached. Email to jacob.losh@pioneerafcu.org or mail to 1316 Kanawha Blvd E, Charleston, WV 25301, Attention: Jacob Losh – Scholarship.
  • Required Documents: The application must include the following:

    • A completed application form.
    • An essay as specified in the guidelines.
    • Official high school or college transcripts.
    • At least one letter of recommendation.
  • Application Deadline: Please ensure all applications and accompanying documents are submitted by May 2nd. 

Applicants should ensure that all information provided is accurate and complete. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

  1. Who is eligible to apply for the Pioneer AFCU Scholarship?

    • The scholarship is open to high school seniors and current college students who are members of Pioneer AFCU. 🔹 Please note: The student applying must be the member — not just a parent or guardian. A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required.

    • Applications can be submitted via email with all required documents attached. They can also be sent by mail to 1316 Kanawha Boulevard E, Charleston, WV 25301.
  4. What is the deadline for submitting applications?

    • All applications must be submitted by May 2nd.
  5. How are scholarship recipients selected?

    • Recipients are chosen based on academic achievements, essay quality, community involvement, and leadership skills.
  6. When will the scholarship recipients be notified?

    • Successful applicants will be notified by May 23rd.
  7. Can I apply if I am related to an employee of PAFCU?

    • Immediate family members of PAFCU employees and directors are ineligible for this scholarship.
  8. How many scholarships are awarded each year?

    • There are five scholarships awarded each year.
